The
U18 Williamsburg Wizards won their Virginia State Cup Semi Final 4-0
today versus VA CASL at Striker Park in Richmond. The Wizards came out
fast forcing a corner after only 3rd minute and then Andrew Hoxie hit
the cross bar in the 4th. Justin Madrid had a shot on goals saved by the
VA CASL goal keeper in the 6th minute and then the break through
came in the 9th minute. A super ball down the right side freed up Teddy
Barry to serve a low curing cross to the back post. Chris Knorowski hit
the ball first time from 14 yards out and beat the keeper at the near
post. 1-0 Wizards. At this stage the tone of the game seemed to be set
as Hoxie again had a good effort saved as did Reed Matthews. But it was
not to be as good possession and hard worked paid off for the VA CASL
team. Although VA CASL did not score they went close pressing Jonathan
Anderson into two fine saves.
In
the second half the Wizards again came out quickly putting together a
clinical display of finishing and precision passing. In the 50th minute
once again Teddy Barry was freed up by a searching 20 yard ball down the
right wing from Bryan Davis. As Barry went forward he took the VA CASL
left back to the touch line looked up and picked out an advancing Davis
at the top corner of the penalty box. Barry coolly laid the ball back.
Davis had time to take a first touch and strike a wickedly curling ball
past the VA CASL goal keeper, sending him the wrong way. VA CASL were to
put up some resistance as a quality cross from the right side resulted
in a volley that struck the bar in the 56th minute and in the 63rd
minute had a shot on goal saved. It was in the 65th minute that the game
was forced wide open. A long punted ball from Anderson was misjudged by
the VA CASL center back, his jump was too early as he went up to head
the ball, and instead for heading in forward managed only to flick in
backwards towards his own goal. Ryan Eure snuck in behind the defender
and headed to goal from 30 yards out. As he raced away down the left
hand side he cut the ball inside and went for the near post. Inside the
six yard area, with the VA CASL keeper advancing Eure slipped the ball
in at the near post between the goalkeeper and post. Later in the half
Patrick Brown hit the post and Jack Collins, with a Thierry Henry like
piece of skill, took the ball out of the air from a long high punt,
controlled it straight to the ground, spun and stuck the ball through
the advancing center back’s legs and looked to go to goal. Only a fine
one versus one save by the VA CASL keeper saved what surely would have
been the goal of the tournament. Eventually the Wizards scored their
fourth from a 30 yard Justin Madrid direct free kick.
