This Summer
Williamsburg, VA and the Williamsburg Soccer club will be host to one of
the most prestigious sports clubs in the entire world.
Manchester United, widely regarded as on the top soccer clubs in
the world, will be sending four coaches from their Manchester United
Soccer Academy Program to host a soccer camp for the Williamsburg Soccer
Club and its members.
This opportunity is a
once in a lifetime chance to be trained by the same people who run the
youth soccer academy in Manchester, England.
It will give the players insight to what a young professional
goes through and an unparalleled opportunity to work with the Manchester
United Soccer Schools top coaches- the same ones who have set one of the
world’s highest standards for player development and produced
Manchester United Stars Gary and Phillip Neville, Ryan Giggs, and David
Beckham. In a quote from the Manchester United Soccer School website,
United Head Coach, Sir Alex Ferguson says “As a club we are always
looking at pioneering innovative ways of training and coaching our
players and believe in sharing our vision of youth development with our
huge global support. Our
objective is for each individual to attain their optimal level of
performance and benefit from coaching the ‘Manchester United
Way’.”
Not only is this a
great opportunity for the players but also a chance for the Williamsburg
Soccer Club coaches to attend and be a part of the experience.
They will be able to learn for 6 hours a day for 5 days from some
of the top youth academy coaches in the World.
They can then turn around with that experience and incorporate it
into their own teams’ individual practice sessions for years to come.
This opportunity stems
from the close partnership that the Williamsburg Soccer Club holds with
Nike Inc. As a premier Nike
Club member, Williamsburg was selected as only 1 of 8 cities in the
entire nation to be able to host the Manchester United Soccer School.
Other Clubs selected were the Dallas Texans from Dallas, TX, Santa
Rosa United from Santa Rosa, CA and the Countryside Lightning from
Clearwater, Fl. All of
these are clubs that boast past United States National Championships
within their club. Bobby
O’Brien, Assistant Director of Coaching for the Williamsburg Soccer
Club stated that “These things don’t just happen to anyone.
As you can see from where they are going this year, they only
visit the top clubs in the country.
And to have arguably the best club in the world come to your
backyard to teach and train your players like real professionals is a
once in a lifetime experience.”
In addition to the
camp, Manchester United will also fly Richard Butler, the Director of
Coaching for the Williamsburg Soccer Club, to the training grounds of
Manchester United to observe the Manchester United Football Club youth
academy in action prior to the camp to ensure that training will be
replicated when they come to Williamsburg.
Butler stated “This is a fantastic opportunity for both our
players and coaches. Nike
is on the cutting edge when it comes to soccer and it is brilliant that
we have been chosen by them to host Manchester United’s Academy Staff
this summer. It is a true honor for all of us here and is an exciting
time for the Williamsburg Soccer Club.”
