CHARLOTTE,
N.C.- Following a season that saw the VMI women’s soccer program
notch the best season in their young history, a pair of Keydets have
been honored by the Big South Conference. Junior Colleen Redmond was
named Second Team All-Conference, while junior Karen Bill earned
All-Academic Team accolades.
“I am really happy for both Colleen and Karen,” said VMI head
coach Bryan Williams. “Both of them worked hard all season. For
Colleen, this shows that she is one of the top players in Conference,
and it is great to see her get recognized for that. Karen has had a
great season, and it’s good to see her being acknowledged for her
academics, as well as her strength and leadership on the field. I am
very pleased for both of them to receive these honors.”
Redmond (Brownsburg, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) was named to the League’s
second team for the second consecutive year. She ranked fifth in the
Big South with 12 goals and her career-best 28 points tied her for the
sixth-most in the League. The leading scorer in the school’s
history, Redmond has now tallied 67 points on 31 goals and five
assists in 50 career contests since transferring to VMI from the
University of Arkansas. She now has two of the top three single-season
goal and point totals in the program’s three-year history, as she
totaled 27 points and 13 goals in her first year at the Institute.
Bill (Yorktown, Va./Williamsburg Soccer Club) became the
program’s second All-Academic honoree, following fellow junior and
Yorktown native Vanessa Berrios, who received the honor last season.
Bill has had her most successful season to date, scoring four goals,
racking up three assists for 11 points. Her 18 career points rank her
third in the program’s history, while her six career assists tie her
for the school’s record. Bill, a civil engineering major, ranks as a
Company Platoon Sergeant in the VMI Corps and has started every game
in her career (51). She has been named to the VMI Dean’s List and
was a tri-captain of this year’s squad.
The 2005 VMI women’s soccer team won seven games, nearly doubling
the program’s previous best season win total of four. The Keydets
notched their first Division I victory in early September with a 2-0
win over Youngstown State and earned their first Big South victory
with a 4-2 win over High Point in mid-October.
