91 Spring 2005 season:
After a successful and exciting trip to
England the U13 Phoenix 91 captured the outright VCCL title
yesterday with a convincing 4-0 win against Beach FC. The season started
with a dramatic come from behind victory over the defending Champs FC
Richmond Mystics, this was also only their second loss ever in league
play. The next day the girls beat SOCA in Charlottesville 2-1. The girls
next faced Roanoke and drew 1-1 at home. The next four matches saw the
Phoenix outscore their 4 remaining opponents by a total of 13 goals for
and zero against to wrap up sole possession of the U13 girls title
(Richmond Stickers 3-0, Reston 3-0, Richmond Kickers 3-0 and Beach FC
4-0). In the final game against Beach FC four different players scored
goals Elizabeth Palmer started the scoring off, Jordan Baldasare slotted
the second goal home and we were up 2-0 and the half. In the second half
Nicole Segala scored from a great angled pass through by Marina
Kolioupolus and Gabrielle (Gib) Zagursky finished the game off with a
fine free kick.
The U13 Phoenix has 18 players committed to excellence 12 out
of the 18 current roster started their careers in WSC’s developmental
programs. Also, the Phoenix has 8 of the original 12 players who started
at the U10 age group. The original 8 members are as followed (Tori
Cooke, Ann Gerhardt, Gabrielle Zagursky, Abbey McIninch, Jessica
Napoleon, Elizabeth Palmer, Erika Tarley, and Jesse Thompson). Their
were 4 players added between the U10-11 years from the developmental
teams ( Mimi Laycock, Lauren Mills, Nicole Segala, and Maddy Duke) and
we also added 6 players from outside of the club ( Jordan Baldasare,
Marina Koliopoulos, Nalani Newton, Karina Nigro, Marisa Rongstad, and
Jordan Snider). All 18 have contributed to the team’s success.The U13
Phoenix finished in fourth place this past fall, however, most of their
matches during that season were very close.
