Williamsburg
Soccer Club Announces New Program
College
Transition Program will help athletes deal with the move to playing at
the next level
Today
the Williamsburg Soccer Club (WSC) announced the creation of its new
College Transition Program (CTP). With the help of local college coaches
Deidre Connelly, Ph.D., Sport Psychology Consultant at the College of
William and Mary, this program will help make the jump from youth soccer
to college soccer easier. Connelly along with Richard Butler, Director
of Coaching for the WSC, and the college coaches will address what
players can expect at the college soccer level, how to deal with a
completely new environment and how to be best prepared going into a
college preseason.
The
session will be held at the Human Services Building on Longhill Road on
Thursday June 23, 2005 at 6:30pm. The session will be mandatory for WSC
players moving on to play in college and at least one parent will need
to be in attendance. The WSC has placed over 120 players in colleges
across the nation over the past 13 years. This year players have been
recruited to and will be playing soccer at William and Mary, Methodist
College, Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College, Coastal Carolina
University, Roanoke College, Christopher Newport University, Campbell
University, Radford University, High Point University and Georgia
Southern University.
“We
have a history at the WSC of developing soccer players that are able to
play at the next level’, said Butler. “This is down to our excellent
coaching staff and the curriculum that our players and staff adhere to
in each year of the developmental process. With the College Transition
Program now in place, and with the help of Deidre Connelly and the
college coaches, I hope that we can alleviate some of the stresses and
difficulties of stepping up into a new soccer environment”.
Deidre
Connelly commented, “Moving up to the collegiate level can be
extremely challenging. Adjusting to college life and a new soccer team
and coach, staying confident, avoiding distractions, and continuing to
improve are all issues which our athletes can address now in order to be
better prepared for the transition. WSC players will be a step ahead of
other college freshmen, and I think the Club is providing a great
service with this resource program.”
