SOCCER CLUB ANNOUNCES OVER $16,000 GIVEN TO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Over
50 will players benefit from program for 2004/05 season
The
Williamsburg Soccer Club (WSC) today announced that it has awarded
$16,035 in scholarships for the 2003/04 seasonal year. The program,
initiated in 1992, has amassed a total of over $100,000 given to youth
players so that they can play soccer with the WSC. The funds are
distributed to players and families who cannot afford to pay to play
soccer. Some awards are full scholarships and some partial. “This
program, along with the Community Partnership efforts by Al Albert of
the WSC, are part of the WSC effort to make high level travel soccer
more inclusive of our community.” Said John Tarley, WSC board member.
The
WSC scholarship fund is funded by numerous avenues during the course of
the previous year. The main fund raiser is the annual WSC golf
tournament held at the Traditions Golf Course in James City County. The
tournament raises a large portion of the proceeds, there are also
donations from individuals, corporations and civic groups such as the
Kiwanis Club. Richard Butler, Director of Coaching, commented, “One of
my main goals since I have been at the WSC has been to make sure any
child who cannot afford to play soccer with our club we can help out.
This is not only for our travel players but for our developmental
leagues, the summer camp program and also our Super Y League program. It
is vital that players from all walks of life can experience soccer
without money being a deterrent”.
The
WSC is a cosponsored group with the James City County Division of Parks
and Recreation Department. There has been a longstanding relationship
between the WSC and the Recreation Department, an initiative started in
the summer of 1993. Ned Cheely, Director of James City County Parks and
Recreation said, “The James City County Division of Parks and
Recreation values all its relationships with its community partners. The
Williamsburg Soccer Club is one of our oldest and most successful. We
appreciate all that they do in helping our community reach our shared
goals for youth”
The
WSC Is a non-profit organization established in 1974 to promote soccer
